Support for our Palestinian and Jewish communities

The continuing violence and loss of life in Gaza is appalling. A peaceful resolution is urgently needed, and we support all efforts being made by the UK government to end the conflict.

Since the attack by Hamas in October 2023, which triggered the latest conflict, the University has focused on the practical support we can offer to our community to ensure they feel safe, seen and heard. We have listened to staff and students from across the University and have had ongoing engagement with the Palestine Solidarity Network (PSN) and members of our Jewish community. We have heard about the devastating impact the conflict has had on families and friends of our students and staff, as well as the impact of rising tensions on the wellbeing of those in our community. We have also supported members of our University who have chosen to withdraw from collaborations that do not align with their values – an important part of academic freedom. This has helped deepen our understanding of how the ongoing violence is affecting people from across the community and we thank all those who have spoken to us for their honesty and willingness to engage.

Over the past 18 months, we have become a University of Sanctuary, updated our Inclusion and Respectful Behaviour Policy and enhanced our support services for students. We have also hosted events and discussions about the conflict as part of our deep commitment to freedom of speech.

We are proud of the diverse and inclusive community we have at BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 and want to ensure everyone feels safe and valued, free from bullying, harassment and discrimination. We want to thank all those from across the University who contribute to this in such a positive way.

There are numerous initiatives and support services available to all at the University, including networks that offer tailored support for those with family or friends in The Occupied Palestinian Territories or Israel:

Wider initiatives, guidance and support:

We will continue to work closely with SUSU, student support services, HR and senior leaders across our community to ensure those affected by the conflict receive any support and assistance they may need. Alongside this, we will stay closely connected to counterparts in other higher education institutions to discuss ideas and concerns, and sharing best practice.
