Clean Water South: A collaboration to tackle water quality in southern England

Published: 2025-06-26 00:01:00
A tranquil scene of a waterway bordered by grass and trees under a blue sky with clouds.

Led by the Future Towns Innovation Hub, Clean Water South is an exciting and growing network bringing together brilliant minds to take on the challenge of improving river and water quality across southern England. From researchers and academics at the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 and University of Portsmouth, to industry experts, regulators, charities, and community groups — we’re building connections that matter.

BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 very first meeting kicked off with high-energy, rapid-fire presentations on everything from smart sensors and sustainable farming to sewage solutions, planning, ecosystems, nutrient neutrality, and green energy. A lively panel on civic responsibility wrapped it all up with plenty of food for thought. In round two, we handed the mic to water companies and regulators to share their biggest challenges — and their boldest ideas, hearing from Southern Water, OFWAT and Spring Innovation.

Hands-on roundtable session

Then came Clean Water South 3 in June 2025 — our most dynamic gathering yet. The day buzzed with hands-on roundtable sessions diving into citizen science, chemical pollutants, data-driven action, integrated catchment thinking, climate-related water demand, and fixing the often-overlooked issue of road runoff. With such a diverse mix of voices in the room, the conversations were rich, the ideas were flowing, and collaborations are already turning into real-world actions.

Next up? We’re working on a series of policy briefings to elevate our findings and projects to decision-makers — and we’ll be sharing early drafts with the network and beyond to shape the impact together.

We are also looking internally at the University to map expertise and research, which will strengthen our outputs and the value of our network.
