The following definition of terms apply to references made within the General Academic Regulations for Research Students.

| Thesis | A dissertation (or alternative format as defined in the Code of Practice for Research Degree Candidature and Supervision), written or produced by the research student. |
| Viva voce | An oral examination with a team of examiners (or assessors) constituted as defined in the Code of Practice for Research Degree Candidature and Supervision. |
| Doctoral College Committee | The Doctoral College Committee reports to and has delegated authority from Senate for leading and directing the development of the postgraduate research student experience and environment at the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载. The Doctoral College Committee has clear powers and responsibilities for developing doctoral researchers and is responsible for ensuring that any equality impacts against each project/policy/process/procedure have been considered as part of the decision-making process. Terms of reference and membership of the Doctoral College Committee are published in the Quality Handbook. |
| Faculty Education and Student Experience Subcommittee | The Faculty Education and Student Experience Subcommittee is a subcommittee of the Education and Student Experience Committee which reports to Senate. It makes recommendations to Senate for the award of taught and doctoral degrees, diplomas and certificates. It oversees, at Faculty level, the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the University strategy and Faculty priorities as they apply to education and the student experience and is responsible for ensuring that any equality impacts against each project/policy/process/procedure have been considered as part of the decision-making process. Terms of reference and membership are published in the Quality Handbook. |
| Faculty Graduate School Subcommittee | The Faculty Graduate School Subcommittee is a subcommittee of Doctoral College Committee which reports to Senate. It considers, oversees and directs all elements of Doctoral Training and support and the doctoral researcher experience. It is responsible for leading and directing the development of the research student environment within the Faculty, co-ordinating and leading on the implementation of the University strategy in respect of postgraduate research degree programmes and for ensuring that any equality impacts against each project/policy/process/procedure have been considered as part of the decision-making process. Terms of reference and membership are published in the Quality Handbook. |
| Faculty Graduate School directorate | The academic individuals with responsibility for overseeing the support and training of research students. The Faculty Graduate School directorate has oversight of research student training within the Faculty, ensuring that this is delivered locally to agreed institutional standards. The directorate includes the Faculty Director of the Graduate School (and Deputy, where appointed), and Doctoral Programme Directors (including those leading Centres for Doctoral Training and Doctoral Training Programmes), and roles supporting the Faculty Director of the Graduate School and Doctoral Programme Directors (including PGR Admissions Tutors and PGR Senior Tutors). |
| Faculty Director of the Graduate School | The individual with responsibility for leading the Faculty Graduate School directorate. The Faculty Director of the Graduate School (FDoGS) is the Chair of the Faculty Graduate School Subcommittee and a member of the Faculty Education and Student Experience Subcommittee. |
| Doctoral College (Faculty) Team | The Doctoral College (Faculty) Team has responsibility for the administration of all research student matters from pre-application enquiries and application through to candidature and award. |
| Academic member of University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 staff | A contracted employee whose role is aligned within the Education, Research and Enterprise (ERE) job family of the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载’s Career Pathways Framework. |
| Academic Mentor | An individual appointed to provide informal guidance during the preparation of the thesis or published works of a member of staff in candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The Academic Mentor will normally be an academic member of staff employed by the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载. |
| Independent Assessor | An academic member of staff employed by the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 who is appointed as an assessor for a Progression Review. In order to allow an objective assessment of the work of the research student, the independent assessor should have had no direct involvement with the research project. In addition, the Independent Assessor should not have provided any significant pastoral support to the research student prior to the Progression Review process - as such those undertaking the role of Independent Mentor should not act as the Independent Assessor for the student |
| Independent Mentor | A person outside of the supervisory team who provides support to a research student. This may include pastoral support, guidance on training and development or careers advice. The Independent Mentor will normally be an academic member of staff employed by the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载, and may be appointed by the Faculty Graduate School directorate or may be sought out by the student or supervisor. |
| Independent Chair | The Independent Chair has no role in the academic assessment of the student, but ensures that the assessment is conducted according to the Regulations for Research Degrees and the Code of Practice for Research Degree Candidature and Supervision; that the student is treated fairly and appropriately; and that the outcome represents fairly the views of the assessors. The Independent Chair will also identify and commend good practice. The Independent Chair is an academic member of staff of the University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 with substantial experience in supervising and examining research students in the United Kingdom. An individual who is not a member of University of BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 staff but who holds Visiting Professor, Fellow or Academic status may not be appointed as an Independent Chair. |
