On 1 September it will?be 35 years since Professor Tim Sluckin arrived?at the University?and began work as a Mathematics lecturer in what was then known as the Faculty of Mathematical Studies.

To mark this occasion, a group of colleagues from Mathematical Sciences?are sponsoring a conference entitled ‘Liquid Crystals, Life and Languages, and other mathematical interdisciplinary studies: Tim Sluckin at 65.’
The?conference will take place over two days,?on Tuesday 30 August from 12:00 –?17:55* and Wednesday 31 August from 09:30 – 15:10 in Building 56, Highfield Campus.
To indicate the breadth of?Professor?Sluckin’s academic interests, Tuesday’s programme will be devoted to theoretical physics (in particular, soft condensed matter and liquid crystals, the focus of much of Tim’s work over his career).
Wednesday’s programme will include:
- A talk from Jon Forster (Mathematical Sciences) on Bayesian inference
- A talk from Richard Werner?(BOB体育登录网址_欧宝体育官网平台-APP|下载 Business School) on economics
- A talk?from Ben MacArthur (Mathematical Sciences) on?mathematical biology
- Talks on linguistics
- Talks on biological anthropology
