This project falls within the field of levitated optomechanics, focusing on experiments involving nanodiamond particles with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) quantum defects. The aim is to explore the coupling between the internal spin degrees of freedom of the NV centres and the particle's motion, with the objective of creating macroscopic quantum states.
Geography and environmental scienceAddressing food insecurity through better food aid and improved collaboration
This studentship is linked to a new UKRI funded project, Food Aid Inequality Rectified (FAIR-food). This project will develop machine learning (ML) techniques for processing acoustic data from sensor arrays, allowing the enhancement of signals and localization of sound sources. Pertussis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium, Bordetella pertussis. Unfortunately, pertussis has resurged globally despite high vaccine coverage. In order to better control this disease, new vaccines are required that induce long-lasting protection and generate herd immunity.

This project aims to validate the hypothesis that ultrasonic surgical tools can both limit cell damage at the site of cutting and stimulate tissue healing in regions remote from the surgical tip.
